The First Fundamental of Marksmanship for the Airsoft Sniper (Part 1 of 4)

A lot of airsoft snipers face a significant barrier to their ability to fulfill their position as a precision marksman because they bring with them a whole host of bad habits that have been established while engaging in skirmishes as the member of a squad wielding assault-style AEGs.

Unlike those who join the military, there is no barrier to entry and no basic marksmanship training required before getting involved in airsoft. Getting started is pretty much as easy as buying a gun and showing up at an event. Load gun, point, shoot, done.

Unfortunately, this translates into an entire group of players that lack a basic understanding of the fundamentals of marksmanship and how to employ them. Now this may not seem like such a big issue in a squad-type setting with close up engagements being the norm where simply sending enough shots toward your target fast enough may be the major determining factor, but this is not the case once a player buys an airsoft sniper rifle and starts to take up long-range firing positions.

If a player finds himself on terrain that requires constant movement between concealment points, then the exertion of getting from place to place along with getting into a sometimes unfamiliar position can often make aiming a very difficult proposition when the crosshairs are bobbling all over like sugar-high kid in a moon-walk.

Other than working hard to maintain a high level of fitness, the only thing that can help overcome these obstacles so that a player can properly fill the role of an airsoft sniper is mastering the Fundamentals of Airsoft Marksmanship. These four principles will enable any sniper who is struggling to accurately place shots with his or her new airsoft sniper rifle to be able to quickly improve accuracy and become the most feared operator on your team.

In this four-part series, we’ll outline what these four principles of marksmanship for the airsoft sniper are, and how you can employ them yourself. Here’s the first one:

Aiming – the first thing that needs to be taken seriously when using an airsoft sniper rifle is to understand basic aiming techniques. Point, shoot, fire is the oversimplified version that many shooters take when in fact aiming is composed of two major elements. Sight alignment and sight picture.

Sight alignment is making sure that your rear sight is properly aligned with your front sight to ensure that your rifle is pointing in the direction that you THINK it is. Sight picture boils down to properly placing your sights on your target.

When shooting with a rifle that doesn’t have a scope, paying close attention to both sight alignment and sight picture are essentially important.

Sighting in with a scoped sniper rifle however, is a different experience from aiming with a non-scoped gun. Sight alignment is not as much of an issue as the scope itself compensates for the proper & straight alignment of the rifle. It is important to know exactly how your scope works, and follow the instructions to properly zero it in well before showing up at the safe zone of any competition.

If your airsoft sniper rifle did not come with a scope, then it’s HIGHLY advisable that you do your best to get one ASAP. With few exceptions all of these guns do not come equipped to properly aim without a scope. Trying to operate as a airsoft sniper without a scope is a lot like building the fastest NASCAR ever but then failing to budget for some good racing fuel…the thing is just not going to work right.

Your scope will come with instructions on how to properly zero it in so that your shots actually end up where you aim. If no instructions are provided, you can find various guides simply by searching the internet.

Once your airsoft sniper rifle and scope are zeroed and ready to go, aiming is as simple as setting your sights on your target and squeezing the trigger. Both sight alignment and sight picture should naturally fall into place.

As the sport of Airsoft continues its surge in worldwide popularity, the number of Airsoft teams and clubs continue to climb as well. These dedicated groups gather as weekend warriors at outdoor venues to participate in sophisticated war games. Dressed in military like fatigues, and armed with replica Airsoft guns, these teams engage in simulated military battles commonly referred to as the Mil-Sim (military simulation).

Of all the role players one can choose to be in these weekend battles, perhaps the most popular of all is the “Sniper”. The Airsoft Sniper is often referred to as the Lone Wolf or Rouge of Airsoft.

This is the gamer that wants to place himself in the perfect hidden location in order to eliminate the opposing players in a deadly ambush. Although a popular identity among Airsoft warriors, few players have mastered the skill of becoming a feared and effective “Super Sniper”.

The first step in becoming a successful Super Sniper begins with having the right equipment! This begins by choosing the Sniper’s most important accessory-the sniper rifle. The goal of the Sniper is to be able to shoot the enemy from long distances, therefore his rifle does not need to be fully automatic or even semi automatic. A well built spring action rifle is usually the choice.

The spring sniper rifle must be one of the more powerful models in order to shoot from long distances with great accuracy. It is also important to keep in mind that the most powerful weapon the Sniper has is his stealth or the ability to stay hidden. The spring action sniper rifles are much quieter than the electric automatic rifles.

One of the most recommended spring sniper rifles is the Super 9 Bolt Action Airsoft sniper rifle. This great Airsoft gun is made by UHC, which is widely recognized as one of the premier manufacturers of spring guns.

Perhaps the next most important piece of equipment for the secretive Super Sniper is his riflescope. The ability to see long distances with accuracy is critical to his success. Often the original equipment scope does not fulfill this requirement and an upgrade is needed. A minimum 4×32 power scope is the desired measure.

The successful Sniper has also mastered the art of military camouflage. Without proper clothing the Sniper is doomed to failure. It is essential for him to be undetected by the opposing teams. Investing in a “ghillie” or camouflage suit is critical to maximum concealment from enemy patrols and other snipers.

This suit is made from a central binding layer and loose strips of material designed to break up the shape of the human body. Super Snipers typically customize their suits by adding plant-matter or rolling in the dirt or mud in order to deaden color contrasts. With the potential for wearing this suit a long time during battles, comfort is a premium.

One of the great mistakes of the amateur sniper is running out of ammunition. As simple as this may seem, this is a common mishap due to the underestimated length of many Airsoft skirmishes. Many a sniper meets his demise as he emerges prematurely from his secret hideout at the most inopportune time in order to retrieve more pellets. You will always find the wise Super Sniper well stocked with plenty of ammo!

Understanding the role and choosing the right equipment will help the Airsoft warrior to be well on his way to becoming a Super Sniper.

In the ever-growing worldwide popularity of the sport of Airsoft, no player has captured the imagination of war gamers more than the character known as the Airsoft “SNIPER”.

Often referred to as the Lone Wolf or Rogue of Airsofting, the Sniper is the gamer who wants to set himself up in the perfect ambush position and than take out his opponents with long range speed and accuracy.

The weapon of choice for this exciting player is the popular Airsoft Sniper Rifle. Of all the available Airsoft guns, the Airsoft Sniper Rifle is best suited for this type of player. Big and somewhat cumbersome, the Airsoft Sniper Rifle is designed for long range shooting with high velocity.

These Airsoft guns are capable of creating some of the highest pellet velocities in the entire industry. These rifles are also noted for delivering heightened accuracy. The Sniper Rifle has an average length of around 42 inches (1070mm), with a firing velocity that approaches roughly 390ft/sec. These guns are usually powered by a bolt-action spring instead of an electric motor or gas.

This makes the rifle advantageous in combat due to the quietness of its firing mechanism as compared to the much louder discharge of other power sources. The quiet bolt-action spring allows the shooter the ability to surprise other players more easily.

Due to their large length, the Sniper Rifle functions more accurately when used in a stationary position, usually mounted on a bipod. Although big in size, they are primarily designed to be used by a gamer who is set up in one spot. Because of its hefty size, these Airsoft guns are difficult to wield in close quarter situations. To alleviate this problem some rifles come with folding or removable stocks.

Along with a bipod, other important accessories for the Lone Wolf Airsoft Sniper and his rifle would include a laser scope. The advanced laser scope gives the shooter his best chance for optimal long-range accuracy.

Being on the move for better ambush locations often necessitates the need for a quality shoulder harness to help in transporting the rifle. A large hi-cap magazine that holds a minimum of thirty bbs is also a necessary ingredient in prolonging the battle life of the gallant Airsoft Sniper.

One of the more popular Airsoft Sniper Rifle model lines is the Super 9 series. Designed after the Belgian police rifle with the customary windows in the stock, the Super 9 series has an extremely realistic look. The Super 9 series Airsoft guns cost around 100 U.S. dollars without any upgrades.

It is important to keep in mind from a cost perspective that in order for the Super 9 to be effective in a serious Airsoft war game such as the Mil-Sim, it will require a number of the significant upgrades already mentioned. This will also increase the financial investment.

There are many exciting types of Airsoft guns available to all Airsoft enthusiasts and veteran war game players. But to those gamers who prefer the sniper’s thrill of stealth and surprise, no gun can match the exciting Airsoft Sniper Rifle.

It is extremely important for the Airsoft sniper to choose the right rifle. There are several reputable manufacturers who produce different model lines of Airsoft Sniper Rifles. Some with such detail that they are very difficult to distinguish from their real “steel” counterparts.

The Airsoft Sniper Rifle is available to the consumer at a broad price range. Some of the models with the more exquisite detail, and with metal and wood casings can cost well over a whopping 2,000 U.S. dollars!

Made almost completely out of steel and wood, these super expensive models have high quality interior mechanisms that fire the gun. With their heavy feel, long barrel lengths, averaging around 42 inches (1070mm), and with their quality detail, these expensive models are well worth the price to the avid Airsoft player.

The above average cost of the sniper rifle has proven to be a barrier to some enthusiasts. Though the average Airsoft player cannot afford such a high price for a gun, there are some excellent, less expensive models.

These rifles are not in the very expensive luxury category, but nonetheless are still a high quality gun. For a well built model, one can expect to pay around the same price that he would for an automatic electric Airsoft gun (AEG), between two or three hundred U.S. dollars.

The higher quality Airsoft Sniper Rifle is usually made from heavyweight ABS plastic. This heavyweight material is a blend of plastic and metal. The ABS plastic gives the gun a cost effective, realistic heavy feel without the expensive steel manufacturing. The Airsoft Sniper Rifle that is made of this material is generally marked ABS, which usually increases its overall value. Tanaka and Maruzen manufacture the most popular of these models.

It is also important to note that even less expensive Sniper rifles are also available. These guns are made primarily out of plastic, and can usually be purchased for around 100 U.S. dollars. Unicorn Hobby Company (UHC) of Taiwan makes one of the most popular models. This low-end, cheap Airsoft Sniper Rifle model is called the UHC Super 9.

In purchasing a cheap Airsoft Sniper Rifle, one can easily exchange some of the parts for metal or wood at a later time. This not only makes the gun feel and look more realistic, it increases the its overall value.

Most major manufacturers offer upgrades such as metal barrels, custom grips, red light scopes, wooden stocks, laser sights, bi-pods and other accessories. The added expenses of potential needed upgrades must be kept in mind. Although capable of a decent firing experience when initially purchased, in order to be effective in serious war game battles, some upgrades will be needed.

Tokyo Marui of Japan has developed a new Sniper Rifle called the VSR-10. At a manageable price, this rifle works quite well before any upgrades are made.

Choosing the Airsoft Sniper Rifle that accommodates the right budget is certainly very important. No matter the price, these exciting guns are sure to bring great enjoyment to gallant Airsoft warriors everywhere.
